Famous for its tofu speciality, the Shengkeng Old Street started to prosper because of its trading market that sells tea leaves and dyes. Its major landmarks feature the century-old Toog Tree and Camphor Tree. Walking along the old street, there are visible archaic architectures built with red bricks featuring the arcade almost anywhere. Among them, the most typical architecture on the Shengkeng Street is called the “De Xing Abode”. No should miss the famous tofu dishes when visiting the Shengkeng Old Street. Some flavorful street food is also quite famous since it’s made of four typical ingredients known as the “tofu, green bamboo shoots, black pork and tea leaves”. There are places to dine in a century-old house where tourists can find it quite interesting just to look at the century-old house in its archaic-style design. The tofu dishes made in Shengkeng District smell so good that they have attracted tons of greedy eaters to visit here each year.

This is the earliest pioneering area in Shiding District. The stone bridge called Wanshou Bridge has divided the street into two parts, the east street and the west street. The Stone House in Shiding, its century-old tofu shop, the architecture of the Diaojiaolou stilted building, and the Bu-Jian-Tian-Jie street where no one can see the sky are all the tourist attractions one shall never miss out. The Guniang Temple in Shiding is located in Yongding Village. The small temple was first built over a century ago. After several rehabilitation and expansion, the main deity being worshipped in the temple is the female immortal named Wei Bian. At the Guniang Temple, the way of worshiping is very special. A visitor should ask for a red envelope with $NT 20 from a temple staff to put the money on the table so that he or she can take it back after saying prayers. If the wish does come true, the visitor can donate money to the temple as a way of giving it back for all his or her wishes. It is believed that the Guniang Temple does grant people’s wishes and it works all the time. Afterwards, the Wei’s family sold the place to Zeng Gui so that the current manager of this temple is a descendant of the Zeng’s family.

The Sky Lantern Police Station located in Pingxi is made of a 9-meter tall glass canvas in the shape of the huge sky lantern decorated with about 200,000 LED light bulbs. Its construction featuring the sky lantern culture of Pingxi has merged into the local landscaping and skyline as if it were a praying sky lantern erected at the end of the Jingtong Old Street. Its dim lighting shines as if it were a huge lantern built by someone for prayers!

Built in 1937 during the Japanese Occupation Era, the village used to be called the “Ginza in Jingtongkeng” area due to its mining business. In 1975, after the mine was closed, the pioneer ceased production at the open-pit mine in Shidi. Jingtong Old Street began to decline. Today, the old street has transformed into a tourist old street where there is an 80-year-old TRA Jingtong Station made of wood, which has become one of the Top 100 attractions in Taiwan. Besides, the most eco-friendly electric sky lantern exhibition hall is a place to experience the romantic feelings as if watching a gorgeous sky lantern flying into the sky.

The old street was built along the mountain slope. On the narrow cobble stone road, the traditional Shop-House was well-preserved. The house was mainly built as a 2-story ancient building, which gives a sense of antiquity to the building even today. On the 1st floor, there are a Traditional Taiwanese grocery store and a Japanese-style Cloth House. What is so special about the old street is its local train quickly passing through the railway bridge above your head. This is the Jun Ya Avenue famous for its TV commercial shoot that sells the instant noodles many years ago. The street block looks quite old and it makes tourists think of many classic memories.

TRA Lingjiao Station was built to transport coal in the early times. The railway makes a U turn over here because the platform of the station was built in an arc shape at 108 degrees. After the mining industry started to decline, it has been transformed into a place to give passengers a ride. There are only a few house built along the old street in front of the station. There’s another double-floor western-type building made of red bricks built by the mining business tycoon of the past, Mr. Tsai Cuan. Its arch-shaped pedestrian arcade and the broad courtyard show the magnificent mansion owned by a rich and powerful family of the past. There’s also a century-old temple that worships the Village Deity besides it.

Mt. Lingjiaoliao is located between Wanggu and Lingjiaoliao. Both places have entrances and exits to this area, and are very close to the stations on both sides. Along the way, there are bountiful natural resources and ecology such as the Taiwan acacia tree, Gordonia axillaris tea tree, and Makino bamboo forest. Passengers will pass through the three treasures of tourist attractions in the Lingjiao area (Tsai’s Residence, Wanggu Waterfall, and Lingjiao Old Bridge). It is suggested that you can take a walk to the Wanggu Waterfall to appreciate its beautiful scenery along the walking trail, and then you can climb on mountains. you can hang around the shops and food stores in Lingjiaoliao area.

The lilies are known as the native lilies in Taiwan. Lilies are in full blossom starting from every mid-August to the end of September. The white flowers with red spots look gorgeous. Known for its deer pattern, these lilies were called the most beautiful lilies in Asia. Since its native land is narrow, the number of wild species has been drastically reduced a lot resulting in seriously making some species extinct. In 2006, the Taipei City Government, Pingxi Farmers' Association and Pingxi Elementary School started to work on wildlife rehabilitation together. Finally, they have some results so far and the flowers grown in Pingxi township are rare and unique.

Wanggu Waterfall is located near the Wanggu Station, a station built in a mythical, remote area. There are only a few households settling down here. The suspension bridge on top used to be a bridge to transport coals and mines for the Ching-Ho mining company across the areas in early stage. Following the index to the way, it takes only a few minutes to arrive at the Wanggu Waterfall Walking Trail. Wanggu Waterfall is a river that passes across the mountains. The curtain waterfall was created due to its horizontal layers of rock and the difference between the soft and hard landforms. It’s so refreshing just to see the waterfall flowing down into the green pond below surrounded by the forest!

Shifen is the biggest village in Pingxi area where the mining industry started to develop fast. Meanwhile, it is also the place of origin for the sky lantern. It is rare to see a place like this where the railway was built on top for “the train to pass by the front door”. The movie “Dust in the Wind” run by the Film Director Hou Hsiao-hsien and some singer’s music video were filmed right here in Shifen. There are plenty of craft shops that sell sky lanterns by the street, and some other stores that sell the postcards printed “Shifen happy” (literally meaning “very happy”). It allows the old street to stay as it always has been.

There’s a fall of 20 meters at the Shifen Waterfall. Its width is about 40 meters. The waterfall is classified as the curtain waterfall. Its falling water is pretty amazing. It was called the Niagara Falls in Taiwan. Through its reflection of the sunshine, the moisture reveals a rainbow on top of the waterfall so it was also called the “Rainbow Pond”, a must-visit tourist attraction in Shifen District. The waterfall used to be encircled by a private entity. It was opened to the public by the end of 2014 after the change of plan. People can freely access to the waterfall to appreciate its beauty today.
